Pilates Q&A

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a full body conditioning program that focuses on training the mind and body to work together more effectively and efficiently, and by doing so it can dramatically transform the way your body looks, feels, and performs. It incorporates modern exercise science and rehabilitation principles, emphasizing neutral alignment, core stability and peripheral mobility. Pilates builds strength and improves flexibility, agility and economy of motion. It is a safe form of movement that will help you look and feel your very best, making it optimal for both fitness clients and those that need to rehabilitate injuries.

How PilatesWise programs are different than other Pilates studio services around North County?

PilatesWise offers much more than just fitness Pilates. PilatesWise instructor will evaluate your posture, alignment, and body mechanics to understand the nature of your muscle imbalances, pain and dysfunctions, if you have them. Our instructor, Tuula, has Physical Therapy background that helps her understand more about your body function, compensation and movement patterns. Tuula will tailor her Pilates program just for you based on your posture and body biomechanics. She will also use therapeutic, corrective exercises and functional training if they are beneficial for your needs and conditions. Her high quality education and many years of experience give to you a knowledgeable and safe training with variety of techniques and programs to improve your overall fitness, sport performance, recovering process and quality of life.

What are Therapeutic Exercise, Corrective Exercise and Functional Training?

Therapeutic exercise is any exercise that helps a person recover from injury. These exercises increase joint mobility, stability and function as well as muscles strength, flexibility and function.

Corrective exercise is a form of exercise that helps bring the body back into proper postural alignment by decreasing postural imbalances.

Functional training is any type of exercise that has a direct relationship to the activities you perform in your daily life. It emphasizes the body’s natural ability to move in all anatomical directions. The training increases muscle balance, core strength and stability as well as whole body biomechanics.

I have a chronic lower back pain. Can Pilates help my back?

Pilates method is gentle and safe for people who suffer back pain. What makes Pilates so effective is that it addresses the underlying structural imbalances in the body that lead to back pain. Issues like lack of core support, pelvic instability, muscular imbalances, poor posture and lack of body awareness all affect back health. Pilates strengthens the muscles that support your spine and increases spine range of motion which improves your spine structure’s nutrition. Our experienced instructor Tuula, who is also P.T., will be able to modify the exercises to accommodate your limitations and monitor your improvements. She is also using Spinal Stabilization training, which is proven to be effective exercise form for lower back pain. Back program includes posture assessment to help you better understand what might cause your back pain.

Will Pilates help me recover from my injury?

Pilates is proven to be quite effective with rehabilitation and post-rehabilitation. Of course, always check with your physician before starting any fitness or post-rehabilitation program. Make sure that your Pilates instructor has good hands-on experience and knowledge of rehabilitation before you start Pilates program with her/him. Even though typical Pilates comprehensive teacher education includes over 500 practice hours, there is very little information provided about rehabilitation, and typically many Pilates instructors have dancers’ background. However, PilatesWise instructor Tuula has a Physical Therapy background and more than 10 years of experience in that field, so she is experienced professional in helping you recover with Pilates. Tuula's Pilates teaching style is very personal, therapeutic and holistic.

I have Osteoarthritis - is Pilates good for me?

Pilates offers many good benefits for people with osteoarthritis. Pilates movements help maintain or increase your spine’s and joints’ range of motion and flexibility. By stretching and strengthening movements you will increase blood flow of nutrients to muscles and tendons. Better circulation also serves to relieve aches and stiffness. Plus improvement in posture causes fewer aches and pains. Pilates also works as alternative medicine. Remember, motion is lotion!

Can I do Pilates while pregnant and after birth?

Pilates is a safe form of exercise during pregnancy, if you are healthy. It helps the body reduce discomfort and recover quickly after birth. In postpartum, Pilates rebalances the muscles, particularly those of the spine and lower abdomen. For more information about this subject please click the pre/post natal page.
